Museums Near La Latina Madrid

La Latina sits within walking distance of some of the world's greatest art museums. The neighbourhood is also home to several smaller local museums that offer a window into Madrid's history.

The Golden Triangle of Art

Madrid's three flagship museums are all reachable from La Latina in 15-20 minutes on foot, or 5 minutes by taxi or Metro.

Museo del Prado: One of the world's greatest collections of European art, with works by Velázquez, Goya, Rubens and Bosch. Allow at least 3 hours. Book online to avoid queues.

Museo Reina Sofía: Spain's national museum of modern art, home to Picasso's Guernica and major works by Dalí and Miró. Closed on Tuesdays.

Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza: Covers seven centuries of European painting in a single building — from the Renaissance to Pop Art. Excellent for a broad art survey.

Local museums in and around La Latina

Museo de San Isidro (Museo de los Orígenes): Located right in La Latina, this free museum explores the history of Madrid from prehistoric times to the 17th century. Housed in a beautiful 16th-century mansion.

Basílica de San Francisco el Grande: Not a museum per se, but one of the most impressive neoclassical buildings in Madrid, with paintings by Goya and Zurbarán. Worth a visit for the art alone.

Real Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales: A working convent in the heart of Madrid with an extraordinary art collection — Flemish tapestries, paintings and sculpture. Visits by guided tour only.

Tips for visiting

The Prado and Reina Sofía are both free on certain evenings (check their websites for current schedules). This is one of Europe's great museum bargains.

The Paseo del Arte Card gives discounted combined access to all three major museums. If you plan to visit more than one, it's usually worth it.

After a long museum day, La Latina is the perfect place to recover: a cold beer and a plate of jamón on Cava Baja is the ideal antidote to gallery fatigue.
