Where to Eat in La Latina Madrid

La Latina is Madrid's most concentrated neighbourhood for dining. Cava Baja and its surrounding streets pack an extraordinary number of excellent restaurants, tabernas and tapas bars into just a few hundred metres.

The gastronomy of Cava Baja

Cava Baja is the gastronomic artery of La Latina. In barely 300 metres, you'll find some of Madrid's most iconic restaurants sitting side by side: traditional taverns, Basque pintxos bars, vermuterías, and modern proposals with real character.

The street has attracted food lovers for decades. Classic institutions like Casa Lucio — famous across Spain for its huevos rotos — share the pavement with newer arrivals that have quickly become neighbourhood favourites.

Traditional Madrid cuisine

The typical dishes of Madrid shine in La Latina. Huevos rotos (fried eggs broken over crispy potatoes), callos a la madrileña (tripe stew), croquetas caseras, and cocido madrileño are staples of the area's menus.

Most tabernas also offer a menú del día (set lunch menu) from Monday to Friday — typically a three-course meal with wine at a very reasonable price. It's the best way to eat well in La Latina without spending a lot.

Txakolina: Basque cuisine on Cava Baja

One of the most exciting restaurants on Cava Baja is Txakolina, which brings Basque culinary tradition together with the spirit of the Madrid neighbourhood. The pintxos at the bar, the elaborate toasts and the grilled meats are all standouts.

The wine list is excellent — with a focus on txakolí from the Basque Country and small Spanish producers. The atmosphere is lively but never overwhelming, and it works equally well for a quick snack at the bar or a longer sit-down meal.

Timing and tips

Spaniards eat later than most. Lunch is typically between 2pm and 4pm, dinner from 9pm onwards. On weekends, Cava Baja fills up fast — arriving at opening time (around 1:30pm for lunch) avoids the longest queues.

Sundays are particularly lively. After El Rastro flea market winds down around noon, thousands of madrileños pour into the area for tapas and vermouth. It's a great experience, but do expect crowds.
